Well, the 2.2b version is the one I was trying to use with the newer
hardware, specifically a motherboard with a Nforce 430 MCP chipset,
which controls a lot of key components on the motherboard like the SATA
ports. Needless to say, it's impossible to install an OS on such a
system especially if the OS can't see the hard drives! I was
temporarily able to get around this by borrowing a controller card, but
even with that out of the way, nothing else on the motherboard like the
ethernet port would work with version 2.2b. I even tried upgrading the
kernel to a much newer one, and though the system would then start to
boot from the onboard SATA port, it ran into some other issues that
Michael told me were related to the cinch installer. Granted version
2.2b was released at the end of October last year, but the kernel in the
release is almost a year old. That said, the 430 MCP chipset has been
on the market for more than a year. That's why I was so surprised the
the cAos 3 (beta 3) was able to detect and use everything on the
motherboard without any issues first time.

I have not seen a newer version for cAos 2 than 2.2b on any of the
mirror websites. Is there another version being hosted somewhere else?

I'll try to make contributions to this as I get time. Might be a good
idea to start with a tutorial on the wiki as to how to create ports for
the ports system. So far my experience with the ports subsystem is that
they don't always work due to downloading from sites that sometimes
shift or are unavailable. Maybe you could modify the ports system to
use a centralized location for downloads to avoid this and related
issues, just an idea. For me personally, a package called systemimager
is a must. Under cAos 2.2b I was able to just use the RPM's available
for it and everything worked fine. Under cAos 3 there was a laundry
list of dependencies I had to deal with first (and of coarse those
dependencies also had dependencies of their own). The last stable
release of systemimager won't build under cAos 3 but a newer "unstable"
version built just fine. However, I ran into some problems when trying
to use the executables it built. I'll have to get you a report on this
(what I tried and what went wrong), maybe you can figure it out or
possibly even work in conjunction with the systemimager folk, just my 2
cents.

I'll start a list on the wiki this weekend (soonest time I have
available for it). I've got instructions on how to install a few other
packages to put up on the wiki as well.
